After escaping the all-encompassing black hole that is the Mike Hirsch time warp, Dan C and M.H. head out toward Los Angeles to pick up skate legend Lance Mountain and unsung soul rebel Freddie Desota. The trip went smooth with lots of great stories from Lance and a alphabetical skate name game that killed a few hours. We arrived at Steve Hirsch's home around the midnight hour, so after catching up a little, we all finally crashed. We arrived at Sacramento's Granite skatepark fairly early, and it's quite a sight to behold as you come around that corner and look down at it for the first time. The park is massive and everything is good. There are a lot of different areas/features to skate and someone remarked that it reminded them of some of the old parks where you might not even realize your friend is there sessioning the other side of the park.

Dan C - Granite Skatepark

We were met by our norcal friend Tim Metz who showed us the lines and stoked us once again with his smooth and ripping style. Lance started working the pool and also hit some high lines in the 3/4 pipe, nearly grinding the top.

We then headed south to the little town of Ione. In the middle of nowhere sits a really killer little skatepark with a really fun street flow area and a killer pool. We now had our new friend Curtis in tow, who has his own backyard custom created pit. Great session with Steve's vintage tunes blasting, super chill vibe and some ripping skating. Steve had the lines and his shallow end boardslides and both direction deathbox attack inspired us. Curtis blew us away with his mid 40's no pads/helmet backyard style smith grinds. Lance is always down for a pool session and showed us what 30+ years of constant skating is like. Mike found some lines and some ripping grinds and rocks when not documenting the action.

Ione Skatepark

Dan C felt right at home with his f/s and b/s 50-50s and a frontside grind revert over the deathbox. Freddie doesn't skate too often, but he still pulled one of his signature frontside rock and rolls and some tasty grinds. Tim ripped with his perfect tail blocks and really blew our minds when he dropped in with his board backwards straight into a 240 shove-it to axle stall with no pause whatsoever. When asked "where did that come from" he replied in usual low key fashion "I used to do those". We skated as long as we could with a few other bros, then headed out for Mexican food to plan the next day.

Curtis was good enough to invite us to his home to try his custom swimmer. It rode like a real backyarder with steps, stairs. lights and deathbox to maneuver.

Steve Hirsch Busting Out on his OG Variflex Model

We sessioned that thing for hours with some of Curtis' local ripper friends. Lance especially likes a challenging spot and drew some amazing lines with incredible speed in that tight hole. Super fun session with some super cool people.

There is a string of parks on the way home. We briefly checked out Ripon. It was pretty cool. Then we hit the tiny town of Selma. They have a killer bowl there. We sessioned that briefly but didn't have much left and knew we needed to keep going.

Selma Skatepark - Getting Ready for Impromptu Demo LOL

Northern California has some killer spots and some cool and ripping skaters. Thanks to everyone. We had a great time. Hope to go back soon.

SLAP Magazine’s Mark Whiteley and Joe Brook are the Team Captains for the Regular team while The Skateboard Mag’s Dave Swift is Team Captain for the Goofy team. Each Team Captain picks five skaters to pre-qualify for their Team. These five pre-qualified skaters—the Starting Five—will go straight into the GvR Finals on Sunday.

On Saturday, qualifiers for the rest of the Goofy and Regular Team skaters take place. The Goofy and Regular skaters will compete to make the cut of ten for each Team. The ten from each Team then join the five pre-chosen skaters and these fifteen skaters then comprise each Team for the Finals on Sunday.

During Sunday’s Finals, skaters on both Teams will compete in two distinct sessions. In the first half, a coin toss will determine which Team skates first. Each of the three heats will feature five different skaters from both Teams who will skate one introductory run followed by a five-minute jam. In the second half, each team, goofy and regular, will skate in two 10-minute jams.

Each team may substitute freely after five minutes of the heat, however, the starting five for each jam must be different. Injury substitutions are allowed at any time. There will be two Heats for each team, Regular and Goofy. Finally, if less than 25 points separates the two teams, the Team that is behind in overall score will challenge the other Team to a game of SKATE in any area or on any obstacle in the skatepark they choose. Each Team will pick two skaters to go head-to-head and the winning team will receive an extra 25 bonus points towards their overall score.
